Artist’s Statement
Having worked in watercolors since the early 1970s, I find that watercolors are the perfect medium for capturing the atmosphere of a scene. The versatility and spontaneity of watercolors allow for a wide range of affects. Some favorite atmospheres include fog, sunrises and sunsets. Using muted tonal qualities, earthy colors and delicately balanced compositions I try to convey a sense of peace and tranquility, with a slight air of mystery.
Many of my landscape paintings are made in the arts and crafts tradition that was heavily influenced by the painters of the late 1800s and early 1900s, known as the California tonalists. The medium of watercolors provides a versatility and a spontaneity that allow for a wide range of atmospheric effects.
The natural landscape, boats, old vehicles and architecture each in their own way provide me with inspiration for watercolor paintings. In addition to watercolors, other favorite mediums are monotypes and ink drawings, especially for rendering old vehicles and boats.
